JOB SUMMARY
Plans, installs, modifies, maintains and makes repairs to microcomputer hardware and software systems, and provides technical assistance and training to system users.This position requires knowledge of a body of standardized rules, procedures, and operations requiring training and experience to perform a full range of assignments and resolve recurring problems. The supervisor makes assignments by defining objectives, priorities and deadlines and assists the employee with unusual situations that do not have clear precedents. The employee plans and carries out the successive steps and handles problems and deviations in the work assignment in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted practices. Completed work is usually evaluated for technical soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements. Procedures for doing the work have been established and a number of specific guidelines are available. Situations to which the existing guidelines cannot be applied or significant proposed deviations from the guidelines are referred to the City Manager. The work includes various duties involving different and unrelated processes and methods. Decisions regarding what needs to be done involve various choices requiring the employee to recognize the analysis of the subject, phase, or issues involved in each assignment, and the chosen course of action may have to be selected from alternatives. The quality of work product or service affects the design or operation of systems, programs, and equipment throughout the City. Operating in a moderately structured setting and personal contacts are usually with administration, staff, vendors and others to coordinate, plan, or advise on work efforts or to resolve operating problems, working towards mutual goals with cooperative attitudes. The work requires some physical exertion such as recurring lifting of moderately heavy items and may require above-average agility and dexterity. The work involves moderate risks or discomforts requiring special safety precautions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
· Primary duty is to configure, install, audit, oversee, diagnosis, repair, maintain, support, troubleshoot, and act as purchasing agent for all the technological equipment, programs, and software for city departments and sub locations which includes mobile units used by public safety departments.
· Responsible for assisting in backup and disaster recovery storage, manage antivirus prevention, firewalls and web filtering.
· Directs major repairs to appropriate vendors.
· Responsible for troubleshooting of all city cellular devices as well as necessary upgrades.
· Responds to staff inquiries concerning systems operation and diagnoses system hardware, software, and operator problems.
· Instructs users in use of equipment, software, and manuals in a professional and courteous manner.
· Responds to help desk tickets to make the necessary repairs or modification to ensure minimal interruptions in city business.
· Provides technical support to staff on new and updated software, systems and hardware.
· Installation, upgrades, diagnosis, repair, maintenance, testing and modification of computer hardware and peripheral components such as servers, monitors, keyboards, printers, and disk drives.
· Installation and troubleshooting of specified standardized City-wide computer software packages such as operating systems, word processing, department specific programs, or spreadsheet programs.
· Replaces or upgrades defective or inadequate software packages.
· Serves as an administrator to website, point of contact for provider as well as provides support to users and assist in troubleshooting of website when needed.
· Provides weekly updates, status, and completion information to the City Manager problem request tracking system, and/or end users by way of voice mail, e-mail, or in-person communication.
· Provides ongoing assessment of short- and long-term hardware/software needs for the City, such as testing, implementing new and revised programs, including yearly IT budget figures.
· Serves as custodian of network infrastructure.
· Maintains maintenance schedules, updates, inventory and replacement of all information systems assets according to City inventory policies or practices, and repairs network and telecommunication infrastructure as well as operational problems with standard office equipment.
· Responsible for maintaining warranties and software licenses on all applications systems that support the city functions.
· Monitors and verifies that backups of critical City data are performed regularly.
· Monitors performance of switches, gateway, and intrusion prevention and detection systems.
· Establishes and maintains network user accounts, directories and security.
· Oversees the configuration, installation, maintenance, evaluation, and repair of audio equipment used by the City.
· Assists in resolving hardware and software problems.
· Works with City departments in the installation and maintenance of department specific software and hardware needs.
· Conduct training sessions for staff if necessary.
· Keeping up-to-date technically and applying new knowledge to your job.
· Performs other duties as may be assigned.
